Private Sitka by Classic Car

During this 2-hour comprehensive tour of Sitka you will learn the rich history and fascinating facts about this little corner of Alaska that was once dubbed the Paris of the Pacific due to its status as the most industrious city on the Pacific Rim in the mid-1800s. This tour allows you to see Sitka the way you want by selecting sites that interest you and suit your personal tastes to maximize your enjoyment, the following are suggestions for your possible tour.

You will be in the company of a Certified Southeast Alaska Naturalist with over 20 years of experience in the tourism industry. Your driver has been a resident of southeast Alaska for over 30 years and his knowledge of Sitka and the surrounding areas is endless.

Learn how Sitka's culture was influenced for centuries starting with the Tlingit people and then its position as the capital of Russian America before its transition to the United States in 1867. Various cultures of indigenous people have continuously occupied the Alaska territory leading to the Tlingit native residents that have history dating for nearly 10,000 years.

Your exploration begins as you meet up at the Old Sitka Dock and head out to Old Sitka, site of the first Russian occupation in the state. At Starrigavan you will hear about the area's native history and look for salmon during spawning season. Make your way to Katlian Street for a quick lesson on fish processing then stop by Sheet Ka Kwann Naa Kahidi Community House for some cultural displays.

You will ride down Lincoln Street, the main drag in Sitka, where your knowledgeable guide will point out areas of interest. You then travel over the bridge and visit Mt. Edgecumbe, a native boarding school, continue to Castle Hill and observe the ground where the Russians officially handed Alaska over to the United States. You will also visit the old pulp mill site Fortress of the Bear ($10.00 entrance fee per person) and look for marine animals at Silver Bay.

Throughout the tour you will be surrounded by Sitka's natural beauty at every turn and come to understand why your guide believes Sitka is now the Paris of Alaska. Make photo stops as you wish along the way as your personal guide informs you of your surroundings in a fun and entertaining manner. The Raptor Center is also a very popular attraction in Sitka and can be an added stop ($14.00 entrance fee per person).

This is a true up close and personal look at Alaska through the eyes of not only a resident but with someone whose love of the land and knowledge will make for a priceless memory of your time in Sitka.
