Private Edinburgh Castle And The Royal Mile

Offer Image
Get a taste of Edinburgh's architecture and visit the Castle on this half day program

Private Edinburgh Castle and The Royal Mile

After meeting your driver and chaperone at the pier, you will drive to the castle on the hill. Standing high above the city, Edinburgh Castle is a magnificent sight. Not only is it a historic monument but also a working military establishment where the Scottish Division headquarters are based. Archaeological evidence suggests that the first settlers on this volcanic hill, then surrounded by forest, were Bronze Age around 1000BC. Even these early settlers recognized the strategic significance of this commanding and defensible site. By the middle ages this had developed into a mighty fortification and royal residency. Throughout the ages the castle was continually besieged, held by the English as well as the Scottish, but always to rise again. Badly damaged many times this is why the castle now hosts such a mix of architectural styles. The Castle is the number one place to see in Edinburgh, visitors flock to it in great numbers all year round and queues can be very long. No need to worry, though as your tour includes a fast track entry to this truly magnificent attraction. Once inside, you can choose to explore on your own, or join a tour by one of the castle guides.

Earning its name by having a Castle at one end and a Palace at the other, The Royal Mile connects these two via a single street that bursts with history and contains enough shops to give the most hardiest of credit cards a good work out. You will have approximately 90 minutes of free time on your own to explore the many shops, pubs, cafes and attractions to be found. If you are looking for anything specific please ask your chaperone or driver, they will be only too happy to help.

After lunch or just a good walk around, sit back in the comfort of your coach as your driver and chaperone take you on a tour and show to you some of Edinburgh's highlights as the coach makes it way back to your ship.

Please Note: This tour only operates out of the Ports of Leith and Rosyth. We will not be able to accommodate you if your ship docks in South Queensferry.
